Frozen

Freeze a quarter and cover it with frost by blowing on it!

The Effect:

Ask a spectator to wrap his own quarter in a plain napkin you give him. The neat part of this trick is that the magician doesn't touch either the napkin or the coin until they are handed to him by the spectator.   [Note: there are no chemicals on the napkin and none in the magician's mouth or on his hands]

Summoning a change in his body temperature, the magician begins to blow freezing air onto the napkin, causing the napkin to become ice cold. He unwraps the quarter and, leaving it sitting by itself on the napkin, without even touching it, he blows on the coin.

The quarter frosts over white and freezes visually. When picked up by a spectator the coin is bitter cold and still white from frost.

Review

The first time we saw the video our jaws dropped. It looked so real and supernatural, that it was a little spooky. If it wasn't real magic then it had to be some sort of optical illusion or good video editing.

Once we got our hands on the DVD, we found out that the coin actually does frost over. The setup time is short, about 39 seconds. This thing is real. No video editing involved. Best of all, it is easy to do.

Overall, it is a much easier trick to perform than you would think. You can do the trick with or without the napkin. The napkin method is the easiest of the two. If you perform the trick without a napkin the setup is a bit more complicated, but you only have to do the setup one time and you can setup in front of the spectator without them realizing it.

We prefer the napkin method for several reasons. It provides a better effect because the napkin also frosts over, plus the napkin keeps the frozen quarter from sticking to your skin. (Remember the kid sticking his tongue on an icey cold steel flagpole?).

If you use the napkin, then after setup you have about 20 or so minutes to perform the trick, but that's no big deal.

You can do the trick with or without sleeves, but make sure your shirt has a pocket.

Overall, this is one heck of a trick. You look like Old Man WInter blowing frosty cold breath out of your mouth (no chemicals, so don't worry). If you get the trick, try freezing other things like a nail or fingernail clippers. You can vary your routine.

If you have kids, they will love this one. Then again, we're all big kids when it comes to magic.
